Fabric

We recommend cotton canvas, duck cloth, or similar, 10oz-12oz weight (339gsm - 407gsm) for best results.  The following chart shows the required amount of fabric for each type of bag. It’s always a good idea to have a little extra fabric on hand, so we recommend you buy a little more than we have listed.

45" (110 cm) wide fabric
LITTLE - 1/3 yd (30 cm)
BIG - 1/2 yd (46 cm)

60" (150 cm) wide fabric
LITTLE - 1/3 yd (30 cm)
BIG - 1/2 yd (46 cm)

NOTE: Fabric amounts don’t include fabric to make your own straps. If you’re planning to make fabric straps, buy an additional 1/4 yd fabric.

Notions

  • The Standard Necessities: Sewing machine, Steam Iron, Ironing Board, Pins

  • Thread (all purpose works fine, but heavy-duty thread is also a great option for sewing with 12 oz. canvas and above and for sewing leather straps)

  • Heavy-Duty sewing machine needles (for 12 oz canvas and up and for sewing leather straps)

  • Non-Separating Zipper

    • 8” (20.5 cm) Zipper for Little size

    • 12” (30.5 cm) Zipper for Big size

      • We like to buy our zippers here!

  • Straps - you can choose between leather and fabric:

The length of your strap is ultimately up to you! I use a 45” (114 cm) strap, but I’m very short and like short straps on my bag -- you might want yours quite a bit longer than mine! Use your measuring tape to imagine your strap or measure the strap on your favorite shoulder bag before you buy your leather! Think about whether you’d prefer to wear your bag primarily on your shoulder or cross-body!

    • Leather: 40-60” long by 3/8” wide by 1/8” thick (114 cm - 165 cm by 1 cm by 3 mm)*  (Decide final length based on personal preference, leaving about 5 inches extra for wiggle room)

    • Fabric: use the same fabric as your bag! Start with a 60” by 1.5” strip of canvas  (153 cm by 4 cm)* or shorter if you’ve already determined the length of your strap -- just make an extra 5” (12.7 cm) for wiggle room! Find instructions for making your fabric straps on page XX

  • 80” 1 in. wide cotton twill tape or 1/2” wide double fold bias tape (203 cm long, 2.5cm wide cotton twill tape or 203 cm long, 1.3 cm wide double fold bias tape)
